I Know My Redeemer Lives (Job 19:25-27)

Times of prosperity and of suffering are likely to be spiritually dangerous – Prov.30:8-9. Job feels pursued by both God and man – 19:21-22. There is a hint of resurrection (14:14-15). Job is struggling but utters one of the most remarkable expressions of faith found in Scripture – 19:25-27.

  1. Job is assured that his Redeemer lives.
    • ‘I know that my Redeemer lives.’ He had been looking for some kind of umpire – Job 9:33-34. A Redeemer is one who buys back slaves or property – read Lev.25:25-28, 47-49. The Redeemer is divine – Isa.44:6. See Heb.7:25; John 14:19.
  2. The divine Redeemer will stand victorious.
    • 19:25-26; see Gen.3:15; John 8:56; 1 Cor.15:20. Imagine a couple buying a bare, unfurnished house. They are excited, they go from room to room, and are delighted. All they can actually see is bare boards and walls, but in their mind’s eye they are picturing the house as it will be. That is what faith does. It gives you a perspective regarding what is coming – 2 Cor.5:1.
  3. Our bodies will be raised.
    • 19:25-27. Job would see God ‘from his flesh’ or ‘in his flesh’. That is the Christian hope – Phil.3:20-21; 1 John 3:2.
  4. Salvation is personal.
    • Note the personal pronouns – 19:25-27; Gal.2:20. God his adversary will be God his vindicator! You and I have more reason to say the same thing.
