Peter Barnes | 2 Kings 18:9-16
SERMON NOTES
A GOOD MAN FALTERS
2 Kings 18:1-16; Luke 22:31-34, 54-62
1. A good man in evil days.
– 18:9-12; this recounts what happened to Samaria in 722 B.C. (see 2 Kings 17)
– this was due to Israel’s idolatry and immorality (18:12; see 17:10-17)
– there are consequences when we fail to honour God
2. A good man capitulates.
– 18:13-15; under terrible pressure, Hezekiah undid what he did in 18:7-8
– like Peter at Jesus’ trial; or more like R. J. H. McGowan at the 1933 General Assembly in NSW when he failed to move against Samuel Angus
– what to do in such a situation? 1 John 2:1
3. We gain nothing by concessions to evil men.
– 18:16; this is extreme, and did not work
– Rom.12:18; but appeasement did not work against Hitler in the 1930s; no concessions on homosexual unions is possible;
1 Cor.16:13 is the way to go.
