Put On the New Life
(Ephesians 4:21-24)
– general in 4:17-24, and more specific from verse 25 onwards.
1. Beware of an empty profession.
– 4:20-21 (same expression as in 3:2); The ESV has ‘assuming’; NKJV has ‘if indeed’.
2. Put off the old man.
– 4:22; aorist tense (past); the whole man in Adam, not improvements in part.
– Col.3:9-10; become sanctified because you are (see 1 Cor.1:2); note the deceitfulness involved in Adam’s fall (Gen.3:5-6)
3. Be continually renewed in the spirit of your mind.
– 4:23; present tense; Rom.12:2; Martyn Lloyd-Jones: talk to yourself more than pray.
4. Put on the new man in true righteousness and holiness.
– 4:24; aorist tense (past); Col.3:10; 1 Cor.6:9-11.
– a Scots woman to Rowland Hill: ‘I was thinking what an awful rascal you would have been if you were not converted.’
