Peter Barnes | Psalm 131
SERMON NOTES
Calming our Souls
Psalm 131; 2 Corinthians 12:1-10
Spurgeon: ‘one of the shortest psalms to read but one of the longest to learn’.
1. Think with humility.
– v.1; Ps.92:5-6
(a) when we are tempted to claim to know what God has not revealed. Sometimes we cannot know fully why something happens (Gen.39:19-20; Ex.2:11-15)
(b) when we are tempted to overreach ourselves. Rom.12:3.
Bonhoeffer: ‘we shall have to repeat Jer.45:5 to ourselves every day’.
2. Learn calmness of heart.
– v.2; it is learned (like Phil.4:11-12)
– Robert Murray M’Cheyne: ‘It has always been my ambition to have no plans as regards myself.’
3. Hope in the Lord.
– v.3; 2 Cor.12:7-10.
– Anselm: ‘I believe, that I may understand.’
