Peter Barnes | Ephesians 2:4-7
SERMON NOTES
God is Rich in Mercy
(Eph. 2:4-7)
1. God grants saving grace to some of His children of wrath.
– 2:4-7; ‘riches’ is found six times in Ephesians (1:7. 18; 2:4, 7; 3:8, 16)
– God is wonderfully kind and rich in mercy (Micah 7:18)
2. God raises the spiritually dead.
– 2:5-6; ‘with Christ’ in His death (Rom.6:6-8; Gal.2:20), His burial (Rom.6:4; Col.2:12), His being raised (Col.2:12), and living with Him (Rom.6:8).
– verse 5 is our conversion rather than Christ’s resurrection
– Charles Wesley:
Soar we now where Christ hath led,
Following our exalted Head;
Made like Him, like Him we rise;
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies.
3. God promises a glorious future.
-2:7 – ‘super passing’ as in 1:19; ‘ages to come’ includes the new heaven and the new earth.
– Calvin: ‘It is as if we had been brought from deepest hell to heaven itself.’
