Peter Barnes | Ephesians 1:13, 14
SERMON NOTES
Sealed by the Spirit
(Eph. 1:13-14)
– already and not yet idea in Rom.8:23; Heb.2:8; 1 John 3:2
1. We become Christians through believing the gospel of Christ.
– 1:13a; 1 Thess.1:9-10; John 16:8, 14
2. A Christian is sealed with the Spirit.
– 1:13b – authenticates (Esther 3:12); denotes ownership (Song of Songs 8:6); protects (Rev.5:1-3)
– Charles Hodge and Martyn Lloyd-Jones say this is after faith in Christ, like Acts 4:31, but all Christians are sealed with the Spirit (Eph.4:30).
3. The Spirit is the guarantee of the Christian’s inheritance.
– 1:14; a part of the whole; redeemed now (1:7) and redemption to come (1:14), like adoption in Rom.8:15, 23
– 2 Cor.1:21-22; 5:4-5
– Isa.43:21
