The Eternal God Can be Known (Hebrews 11:6)

It is probably a general statement on faith which was prompted by the example of Enoch.

  1. We must know that faith is necessary to please God.
    • 11:6; Psalm 14:1. James Valentine: ‘I believe in love, hope, truth and my fellow humans… I don’t believe in guilt and shame… Love yourself. Love your neighbour. Find compassion for yourself, your family, your friends and then perhaps the whole world… I don’t need a meaning.’ That is eloquent nonsense.
    • to please God, we need to know what He wants – 1 Samuel 15:22. But then see Rom.3:20; Rom.7:18. God is only pleased with His beloved Son – Matt.3:17; 17:5.
  2. We must believe God is eternal.
    • God exists (ESV). More literally, God ‘is’. He is self-existent, He is eternal. He exists absolutely – Exodus 3:14.
  3. We must know that God can be known.
    • we can draw near to Him – Heb.4:16; 10:22. Also, Ps.105:4; Amos 5:4-6; Isa.55:6-7. Jesus tells us to seek Him – Matt.7:7-8. Augustine writes of God: ‘Of You must we ask, in You must we seek, at You must we knock. Only thus shall we receive, thus shall we find, thus will it be opened to us.’
    • God is known in Christ – Heb.1:1-3. We come because He draws us – John 6:44. God Himself is the reward – Gen.15:1.
