SERMON NOTES
Getting a New Heart
Ezek. 18:31; 36:26-27; Ps. 51:10-11
– from Charles Finney and Hugh Martin
1. Precept: we have the need and the responsibility but not the power.
– Ezek.18:31; but the problem is the heart (Jer.17:9; Mark 7:21-23; John 3:3)
– God tells us to be holy (Lev.19:2); but note Job 14:4; Jer.13:23; Rom.8:3; Gal.3:21
Charles Hodge: ‘No more soul-destroying doctrine could well be devised than the doctrine that sinners can regenerate themselves and repent and believe just when they please.’
2. Promise: God supplies His people with a new heart and a new spirit.
– Ezek.36:26-27
– Augustine: ‘Give me the grace to do as You command, and command me to do what You will!’ John 3:5-6; 1 John 4:13
3. Prayer: believers constantly desire renewal of their hearts and spirits.
– Ps.51:10-11; Luke 11:13; 1 Tim.6:11; 2 Pet.3:18
