Peter Barnes | Romans 10:1-4
SERMON NOTES
Christ the End of the Law (Rom.10:1-4)
Jeremiah 23:1-8; Romans 9:30-10:4
1. Praying for the salvation of zealous Jews.
– 10:1; see 9:1-3
– zeal does not save (10:2); zeal is good in John 2:17; Rom.12:11; but note Gal.1:14; John 16:2; Prov.14:12; Matt.23:15
– suicide bombers are zealous
2. Only the righteousness of God can save us.
– 9:32-33 – Jews stumbled at Christ (Isa.8:14; 28:16); 1 Cor.1:22-23
– 10:3; it is our insufficient righteousness or God’s sufficient righteousness in Christ; see 1 Cor.1:30; Ps.31:1
3. Christ is the end of the law.
– 10:4; ‘end’ can mean ‘goal’ or ‘termination’; both can make sense (1 Cor.9:19-21; Gal.6:2)
– J. A. Bengel: ‘The law hounds a man until he betake himself to Christ; then it says to him, I pursue thee no more, thou art safe.’
