Christ And Adversity (Mark 6:45-52)

  1. Christ tests His people.
    • 6:45. In difficult conditions a crossing might take 6-8 hours. It does not seem to have been life-threatening as in Mark 4:35-38.
    • 6:46-47. Jesus tests His people. See John 11:6-7, 14-15; Luke 13:10-17. Christ is sovereign over all adversity, including Covid-19.
  2. Believers can struggle in life.
    • 6:48. IA boat was found in 1986 which dated back to the first century and it had provision for both rowing and sailing. The fourth watch went from about 3.00 a.m. to dawn about 6.00 a.m.
    • 6:48-49. ‘Went past’ – like Luke 24:28 or like Exodus 33:22?
    • 6:49-50a, 52. In their closed world, there was confusion and fear.
  3. Christ is our comfort.
    • 6:50-51; recall Mark 4:39-41.
    • Job 9:8.
      God moves in a mysterious way,
      His wonders to perform;
      He plants His footsteps in the sea,
      And rides upon the storm
      William Cowper
      Christ does what God does.
    • ‘It is I’ is actually ‘I am.’ ‘I am’ is Yahweh, the eternal I am in flesh.
