Christ As Our Passover (1 Cor. 5:6-8)

In dealing with what to do with the man guilty of incest, Paul says that Christ is our Passover lamb (note Exodus 12).

  1. Sin affects the whole body.
    • 5:5-6 – the two aims are the restoration of the sinner and the purity of the church.
    • Galatians 5:7-10; Luke 12:1 (an exception is found in Luke 13:21).
    • Ecclesiastes 10:1. Alexander Pope:
    • Vice is a monster of so frightful mien,
      As to be hated needs but to be seen;
      Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face,
      We first endure, then pity, then embrace.
  2. Christ is our Passover.
    • 5:7. The Passover lamb was to be without blemish – Ex.12:5. Alec Motyer says that ‘without defect’ means ‘perfect’ or ‘complete’. Only sinlessness can atone for sin.
    • Ex.33:20; Rom.1:18. Hence Heb.7:26-27. The shed blood saves from judgment – Ex.12:7-10, 13, 22. Hence Luke 22:20; and Eph.2:13; Col.1:20.
  3. The Supper is to be eaten in sincerity and truth.
    • all yeast (malice and wickedness) had to be removed – Ex.12:15; 1 Cor.5:8.
    • Ex.12:14. It was a memorial of what God had done, and a feast to celebrate what God had done, and a lasting ordinance so that future generations would not forget what God had done. Sin can easily affect the whole body, but Christ is our Redeemer. Celebrate Him in sincerity and truth.
