Remember Christ Risen (2 Timothy 2:8-10)

Peter Barnes: Remember Christ Risen, 2 Timothy 2:8-10 (Sunday 9 August 2020 Morning Sermon Notes, 9.00 a.m.)

Paul in prison to younger Timothy – 1 Tim.5:23; 1 Cor.16:10-11; 2 Tim.1:6-7.

1. Remember Christ risen. – 2:8. It is not the resurrection so much as the one who was resurrected. – Luke 17:32. Jesus is not saying ‘Remember the pillar of salt so much as remember the woman who became a pillar of salt.’ – not like Acts 17:31-32. Paul is saying to Timothy: ‘Keep in mind what you already know.’ We believe, or we say we believe, but we forget. – see 2 Tim.2:17-18; the spirit supposedly escaped the body, and never returned. No, says Paul, He rose in the body.

2. Remember the word of God is not bound. – 2:9. See Phil.1:12-14. The Word of God may stall in the most favourable circumstances; it may prosper in the most unlikely circumstances.

3. Remember Christ died for the elect. – 2:10. Note the ‘therefore’ or ‘on account of this’. Paul knows that the elect must respond to the gospel call. – Acts 16:25-34. Even in prison, he reached the one of the elect.
