Peter Barnes | Revelation 1-3
SERMON NOTES
Christ and the Seven Churches
(Revelation 1-3)
Approaches – preterist (past); futurist, historicist, or idealist
William Hendriksen sees a series of seven snapshots, each saying much the same thing
1. Christ is the eternal risen Lord.
– 1:4-5a – the firstborn from the dead and the ruler of the kings of the earth
– 1:8, 17 (Isa.41:4; 44:6; 48:10-12; Rev.21:6; 22:13) – the eternal one
2. Christ is both Lord and Saviour of His people.
– through His death (1:5b), and resurrection (1:18)
– He will come in power and majesty (1:7)
3. We are to be faithful in word and deed to our Lord.
– e.g. 2:2-3, 6, 14-15, 19, 20-23
– faithful under persecution in 2:10, 13; humble and reliant on Christ (3:15-17)
– repent (3:19) or the lampstand is removed (2:5)
