(22 October 2017)
SERMON NOTES: THE JUDGE OF HIS OWN PEOPLE (Zephaniah 1:4-13)
– ‘The Day of the Lord’ is a day of judgment (1:7-3:8) and yet also of hope (3:9-20). Earlier, there was Amos 5:18-20; Isa. 34:7; 35:10.
- The sins of God’s covenant people.
– Judah and Jerusalem are in mind – 1:4a; 1 Peter 4:17. The covenant is the cradle of the gospel, but it is not the gospel itself.
(a) the worship was corrupt – 1:4-6; Deut.4:19 & 2 Kings 23:10, 13; Jer.19:4-5.
(b) the leaders were corrupt – 1:8-9 (for v. 5, see 1 Sam.5:5).
(c) trade and commerce was corrupt – 1:10-13. It was not so much that God did not exist but He does not matter.
- God’s judgment against them.
– the day of the Lord is near – 1:7. God will stretch out His hand (1:4), cut off the remnant of Baal (1:4), punish (1:8, 9, 12), and His judgment will be searching (1:12).
– God will act – 1:13.
- Responding to this judgment.
– be silent – 1:7. ‘Hush!’ There is a time for exuberant noise – Psalm 150:1-6. There is a time to be quiet and listen – Habakkuk 2:20; Zechariah 2:13.
– wail – 1:11.
What will the Day of the Lord mean for you?
