Peter Barnes: 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21
SERMON NOTES: DISCERNMENT WITHOUT QUENCHING (1 Thessalonians 5:19-21)
- C.S. Lewis: ‘Opposite evils, far from balancing, aggravate each other. “The heresies that men leave are hated most”; widespread drunkenness is the father of Prohibition and Prohibition of widespread drunkenness. Nature, outraged by one extreme, avenges herself by flying to the other.’
- Do not quench the Spirit.
– 5:19. This obviously goes with the next command about not to despise prophecies. The issue here is ‘quenching’ – a word that is used in Ephesians 6:16. The Spirit is often associated with fire e.g. Matt.3:11. To quench is to dampen – note Acts 2:12-13.
- Do not despise prophecies.
– 5:20. The New Testament church had prophets within it – Acts 11:27-28; 21:8-9; 1 Cor.14:1, 29-32.
- Test all things.
– 5:21a. Faith is not believing every spiritual story you here. How can we test all things?
(a) By Scripture – Acts 17:11. See 2 Thess.2:2, 15.
(b) By the gospel – Gal.1:6-9. That is why we do not bother too much with visions of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes or Fatima, or those who teach the prosperity gospel.
(c) By the person of Christ – 1 John 4:1-2.
(d) By their fruits – Matt.7:15-20. The Didache says that any prophet who angled for food or money was to be rejected.
- Hold fast what is good.
– 5:21b. This is the sifting process.
