Peter Barnes | Ezekiel 2:9-3:15
SERMON NOTES
A MAN OF GOD’S WORD
Ezekiel 2:8-3:15; Jeremiah 15:10-21
– Calvin says that Ezekiel is more verbose than Isaiah or Jeremiah!
1. We must digest the whole Word of God.
– 2:8-3:3; this sustained Jeremiah (Jer.15:16; 20:9)
– there is sweetness (3:3) and woe (2:10) and bitterness (3:14), not just one of the above.
2. The natural man is rebellious against the Word of God.
– 3:4-7; unlike Jonah at Nineveh – with strange people and a strange language.
– Israel has no excuse; the problem is hardness against God and against His messengers; Matt.10:40
3. God strengthens us against the world.
3:8-11; Regent Morton by John Knox’s grave in 1572: ‘Here lieth a man who in his life never feared the face of man.’
4. Bow before God’s ways.
– 3:12-15; astonished or overwhelmed; the prophets did not automatically know God’s will (e.g. 2 Kings 4:27; 2 Sam.7:3-4; 1 Sam.16:6-7); Ezekiel pondered for seven days.
