Peter Barnes | Judges 6
SERMON NOTES
THE CALLING OF GIDEON
(Judges 6:1-24)
– Gideon is mentioned in Heb.11:32
1. Rebellion and Repression.
– 6:1, then 1b-6; the repression is so bad that the camels of the Midianites are compared to locusts
– Gideon cannot thresh wheat out in the open
2. Remorse and Rebuke.
– 6:6, then 7-10; this is an indictment
– Gideon argues in verse 13 but his own father is an idolater in verse 25.
3. An all sufficient God with a weak man.
– 6:11-21; Gideon is a mighty man of valour! But Gideon is weak, and his request for a sign shows this. John Bunyan before his conversion wandered if he could speak and dry up puddles. See John 4:46-48
– the Angel of the Lord is the Lord (6:22-24; see Gen.16:11, 13; Exodus 3:2, 4)
– He is with Gideon as with Moses (Ex.3:12), Joshua (Josh. 1:5), and all Christians (Matt.28:19-20)
