SUSTAINED BY GOD’S CONSOLATIONS
Psalm 94:19
Dietrich Bonhoeffer: ‘I read the Psalms every day, as I have done for years; I know them and love them more than any other book.’
The wicked look like they are running the place, so the Psalmist utters the painful cry: ‘How long? – 94:3; see Psalm 6:3; 74:10.
1. He contemplates God’s attributes.
-he bullies are very vocal – 94:1-7.
– but God is the Creator (94:9); Ruler (94:10-11); and Judge (94:1-2, 20-23).
2. He contemplates the promises of God.
– God promises to act – 94:8. The Psalmist relies on the promises of God – 94:14-15. God will act in judgment – 94:23.
– Luke 18:7-8; 2 Peter 3:13; Rev.16:7.
3. He knows the presence of God.
– he knew it in the past – 94:17-18. Like Psalm 77:9, 11-12. John Newton:
His love in time past forbids me to think
He’ll leave me at last in trouble to sink;
While each Ebenezer I have in review
Confirms his good pleasure to help me quite through.
