DAVID’S TROUBLES IN OLD AGE
1 Kings 1:11-53
Solomon is anointed as king, and Adonijah goes from party mode to fearing for his life. All of this takes place while David was lying on his deathbed.
1. David acts decisively.
– Nathan acts to counteract Adonijah. Bathsheba told David of what Adonijah had done (1:15-21), and Nathan then confirmed the story (1:22-27).
– still on his deathbed, David acted quickly to reassure Bathsheba – 1:28-31 (note v.47).
2. Solomon is anointed king.
– David has Solomon ride on the king’s mule – 1:32-33; the priest Zadok and the prophet Nathan would anoint Solomon as king at Gihon – 1:34, 38-39; and Solomon was to be co-regent – 1:34-35.
– the people responded gladly – 1:40.
– Matt.12:42. Solomon points to Jesus.
3. God’s enemies in disarray.
– 1:41-49; like Luke 15:13-14. Adonijah feels very alone and very fearful – 1:50-53 (note Ex. 21:12-14; Num. 35:15).
– Adonijah does not learn his lesson – 1 Kings 2:16-17; 1 Kings 2:22-25.
– Psalm 2.
