CALLING UPON THE JUDGE IN FEAR
1 Peter 1:17
– Peter has been exhorting his readers to live as holy pilgrims in a hostile world, pointing to a number of motives: grace (1:13); the holiness of God (1:14-16); and the judgment of God (1:17).
1. God judges impartially.
– 1:17. ‘Impartially’ means, literally, without respect to the face.
– Deut.10:17-18; also Deut.1:16-18; Josh.5:13-15.
– Rom.2:9-11. God is not moved by our popularity or our bank account, by our university degrees or our status.
2. God judges us according to our works.
– 1:17; Ps.62:12; Jer.17:10; Hos.12:2; Matt.16:27; 2 Cor.5:10; Rev.20:12.
– 1 Cor.3:11-15.
3. We are to live as exiles in fear.
– 1:17. 1 John 4:17-18 seems against this.
