SERMON NOTES
JEPHTHAH: THE BIBLE’S ROBIN HOOD
(Judges 11:1-33)
– He is saved (Heb.11:32)
1. God chooses an outcast.
– 11:1-3; some say that these were just unimportant people who gathered around Jephthah the outcast, but they were probably more than adventurers (NIV); note 1 Sam.22:1-2.
– 11:4-7, then 8-11; Calvin arrived in Geneva in 1536, was expelled in 1538, asked back in 1540 and arrived back in 1541.
2. Know your Bible!
– 11:12-13 – the Ammonites claim that Israel took their land.
– 11:14-22 – not so! See Deut.2:19; Num.21:26; it was the Amorites who caused all the trouble.
– also, it was God who have the land to Israel (11:21-23); Jephthah knows his Bible, its history and theology, and can use reason (a 300 year old land claim is not convincing! v. 26)
3. Victory comes through the Spirit.
– 11:29-33, as in 3:10; 6:34
