David and the Kingly Line of the Messiah – David at the Height of His Powers

Peter Barnes | 2 Samuel 8-10

SERMON  NOTES
DAVID AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS POWERS
2 Samuel 8-10

– David from two angles: (1) as an example of a Christian; and (2) as a type of Christ.

1. David as our example.

(a) his conflicts. Frances Ridley Havergal: ‘Chosen to be soldiers/ In an alien land,/ Chosen, called, and faithful,/ For our Captain’s band.’ Psalm 60 says they were genuine struggles.

– must be a history behind 8:2. Also in 8:18 the NIV calls David’s sons ‘royal advisers’, not priests, which may give the right idea.

– God gives the victory – 8:6, 14; see too 10:12.

(b) his preference for kindness.

– 10:1-5

(c) his mercy.

– 2 Samuel 9; covenantal from 1 Sam.20:14-17.

2. David as a type of Christ.

(a) His victories.

– 1 Cor.15:22-26; Ps.2:10-12; 110:1; Eph.1:22.

(b) His mercy.

– Heb.2:17; Rom.2:4. This will lead to justice – Heb.10:28-29.
