David and the Kingly Line of the Messiah – David’s Sons and God’s Son

Peter Barnes | 2 Samuel 7:11b-17

SERMON  NOTES
DAVID’S SONS AND GOD’S SON
2 Samuel 7:11b-17

– David thought of building a house (temple) for God but God would build a house (dynasty) for him.

1. God’s covenant promises are sure.

– 7:8-11. This is God’s covenant with David, spoken through Nathan – 2 Sam.23:5; Ps.89:3-4. Thomas Brooks: ‘The whole covenant is a bundle of promises.’

– this covenant goes down two tracks, which are intertwined here, but which we can separate more easily now that the Messiah has come.

2. The sons of David will reign.

– God promises offspring or seed to David – 7:12, 16a; a throne – 7:13, 16b; and a kingdom – 7:13, 16a. Most obviously, it is fulfilled in Solomon, and the Davidic line after him – 1 Chron. 28:6-7.

– counting David, and queen Athaliah, there were 22 kings of Judah. To state the obvious, they all died. They also sinned – 7:14-15. There has been no king in Jerusalem since 587 B.C.

3. The Son of David will reign forever.

– so this prophecy has to be fulfilled in a greater way – 7:13, 16; Isa.9:6-7; Jer.33:14-18.

– Luke 1:32-33; Hebrews 1:5 (higher than the angels!). Augustine: ‘Do not lose heart, brethren, there will be an end to every earthly kingdom.’ There is only one everlasting kingdom – Rev.11:15.
