Peter Barnes | John 17:1-2
SERMON NOTES
Jesus Prays for Glory
Matthew 6:5-15; John 17:1-19
– J. C. Ryle calls John 17 ‘one of the most wonderful chapters in the Bible’; Jesus prays for Himself in vv.1-5, for His disciples in vv.6-19, and for all believers down through the ages (vv.20-26).
1. Christ’s work glorifies God.
– 17:1; the hour was not yet in John 2:4; 7:30; 8:20, but began with the last week (12:23; 13:1)
– both Father and the Son are glorified (cf.17:4-5); yet God will not share His glory with another (Is.42:8; 48:11).
2. Christ has authority over all humanity.
– 17:2; see John 5:27; prophesied in Dan.7:113-14
– Matt.28:18; see Matt.25:31-34, 41; Christ’s victory is certain (Rev.5:13)
3. Christ gives eternal life to all whom the Father has given Him.
– 17:2; see 6:37, 39
– we are unable to come to Christ unless the Father draws us (6:44, 65); only the ones given to Christ will come (17:2, 4, 9, 24)
– John 6:40
