David and the Kingly Line of the Messiah – A Saint on the Run

Peter Barnes | 1 Samuel 21:7-22:5

SERMON  NOTES
A SAINT ON THE RUN
1 Samuel 21:7-22:5; Psalm 142

– this all illustrates Ps.37:23-24

1. Believers can act foolishly.

– 21:7-10. David lies, and then takes Goliath’s sword to Gath! (see 17:4)

– 21:11-15; not the sort of ditty to go over well in Gath (see 18:6-7)

– David’s acting is criticised by Arthur Pink and Roger Ellsworth, but he had little option

2. Show godliness in every situation.

– 22:1-5; a Robin Hood kind of existence

– looks after his parents (see John 19:26-27)

– in September-October 1944 Dietrich Bonhoeffer refused to escape from Tegel prison because of probable recriminations on his family

– 22:5 – David obeys the prophet of God

3. God’s care for His people in every circumstance.

– see the superscriptions for Psalms 34 and 56, then 57 and 142

– God is at work in the oddest of situations.
