Peter Barnes | 1 Samuel 18:1-16
SERMON NOTES
Attitudes to the King
1 Samuel 18:1-16; Matthew 20:20-28
– from here on, Saul is increasingly embittered towards David.
1. Jonathan’s self-sacrificing love for David.
– 18:1-4; from a worldly perspective, Jonathan had no reason to be friends with David.
– Phil.2:4; this is a result of faith on Jonathan’s part; he accepts that David, not he, will be the next king.
2. The people’s adulation of David.
– 18:5-7, 16; the song became known even to the Philistines in Gath (1 Sam.21:10-11)
– it is ill-advised; unlike Miriam’s song in Exodus 15:1-3, 21 which celebrates God, not the human instrument.
3. Saul’s bitter jealousy of David.
– 18:8-9; Prov.14:30
– F. B. Meyer did not envy Campbell Morgan, and Robert Murray M’Cheyne did not envy William Burns. Jer.45:5
– the slide from anger to morbid suspicion to murderous actions to irrational fear, all because the Lord has left him.
– James 3:13-18
