SERMON NOTES
A PLEA FOR HELP
Psalm 143:7-12
1. A plea for deliverance.
– 143:7, 9, 11; see 2 Tim.4:17-18
– this is a plea for deliverance from physical danger from his enemies.
2. A plea for guidance.
– 143:8; a plea for deliverance can come from the hypocrite; not so likely with a plea for guidance
– this was Savonarola’s motto before his execution in 1498
– 143:10; guided by the will of God and the Spirit of God; see Neh.9:19-20; Rom.8:13-15.
3. A plea for victory.
– 143:12; the salvation of God’s people will accompany the judgment of unbelievers. Hence Rev.21:8; 1 Cor.15:24-28.
– note the basis of God’s righteous (v.1); steadfast love (v.8); righteousness (v.11) and steadfast love (v.12). God’s steadfast love and righteousness go together.
– the servant is unrighteous (v.2), yet he remains God’s servant (v.12)
– only Christ brings all this together.
