Peter Barnes | Jeremiah 29
SERMON NOTES
A HOPE AND A FUTURE
Jeremiah 29:1-32; Matthew 7:7-11
– three exiles: in 605 B.C. (with Daniel); 597 B.C. (with Ezekiel); and 587 B.C. (which destroyed Jerusalem). This letter to the exiles was written after 597 B.C. Believers live as exiles (1 Pet.2:11).
1. Live godly but normal lives.
– 29:4-9; do all the everyday things of life, and pray for Babylon! (1 Tim.2:1-2)
– 29:8-9 and Isa.30:9-10
2. Lay hold of God’s promises.
– 29:10-14; God Himself would be their sanctuary (Ezek. 11:16; John 2:19-21)
– God’s good purpose in chastening (Lam.3:31-33); Christ repeats these promises in Matt.7:7-8
3. Heed the true word.
– 29:15-19, 21-23, 26, 31-32; Jeremiah is treated as a madman (see Mark 3:20-21; Acts 26:24)
– in exile, pray for the peace (welfare) of the pagan city
