WHY DID JOHN WRITE HIS GOSPEL?
John 20:30-31
A. J. P. Taylor wrote history books to amuse people; James Boswell wrote the Life of Samuel Johnson to edify people; Richard Dawkins wrote The God Delusion to convince people of atheism. Why did John write John’s Gospel?
1. Jesus performed many clear signs.
– 20:30; Jesus’ seven signs (miracles) plus His own resurrection
– Acts 1:3; John 5:36
2. These are designed to lead us to faith in Him.
– 20:31a e.g. Psalm 110 is fulfilled in Jesus as the Christ
– Jesus is also the Son of God (20:28; read too 4:25-26, 39, 42; 6:66-69; 11:45)
3. All with faith in Jesus have everlasting life.
– 20:31b; John 1:4; 3:16; 5:24
– William Tyndale’s summary of the Bible’s message to sinners: ‘In the gospel, when we believe the promises, we receive the Spirit of life; and are justified, in the blood of Christ, from all things whereof the law condemned us. And we receive love unto the law, and power to fulfill it, and grow therein daily.’
