SERMON NOTES
TRUTH AND MERCY TO JEW AND GENTILE
(Romans 15:8-12)
– this section would support the view that the Jew-Gentile distinction plays at least some part behind what Paul says in Romans 14-15 (although vegetarianism and wine do not fit this well).
1. Truth to the Jews.
– 15:8; Christ was circumcised (Luke 2:21)
– Gen.12:1-3; 18:18; 22:18; 26:4; Gal.3:29
– hence Acts 2:38-39; God is truth and so fulfils His promises.
2. Mercy to the Gentiles.
– 15:9a; not either/or
– see emphasis in Acts 14:17; 17:25, 27, 29-30
3. God’s unfolding plan.
– 15:9b-12;
(a) 15:9b which is Ps.18:49 (and also 2 Sam.22:50);
(b) 15:10 which from Deut.32:43 (Calvin gets a bit obsessive here, and says that this is from Ps.67:5);
(c) 15:11 which is from Ps.117:1;
(d) 15:12 which is from Isa.11:10.
– Ps.85:10-13 – truth and mercy reconciled.
