SERMON NOTES
FORSAKING LIVING WATER FOR BROKEN CISTERNS
Jeremiah 2:12-13; John 4:7-26
1. Apostasy is appalling.
– 2:12; see Deut.32:1 for the heavens
– the honeymoon is over (2:2, 6-7; 3:1)
– Israel has chased after false gods, and the priests and prophets have led the way (2:23-24, 8, 26-28)
2. To forsake God is to forsake living waters.
– 2:13a; also 17:13
– John 4:10-14; 7:38-39
– Rev.22:17; a free offer as to a man dying of thirst in the desert
3. Everything else is a broken cistern.
– 2:13b; see 2:22; New Age, liberal theology, self-esteem therapy, pleasure-seeking, Islam, etc are all substitutes which do not save.
– Blaise Pascal: ‘Since men are unable to cure death, misery, and ignorance, they imagine they can find happiness by not thinking about such things.’
