Peter Barnes | Romans 14:22-23
SERMON NOTES
WHATEVER IS NOT OF FAITH IS SIN
(Romans 14:22-23)
– speaks to the strong in verse 22 and the weak in verse 23
1. Better to be quiet than aggressive.
– 14:22a; at times it is better to keep your strong faith to yourself; to speak may do harm
2. Better to have no regrets than to assert one’s freedom.
– 14:22b; Augustine: ‘when we offend the weak we condemn ourselves’.
– 1 Cor.8:10-12
3. Better to do nothing than to go against conscience.
– 14:23; sin is breaking God’s law (1 John 3:4) but it is also sin if you think it is sin
– Heb.11:6
– see Peter’s reluctance to go against his conscience in Acts 10:13-16; only when he understood what it meant to eat the unclean animals was it right for him to go ahead.
