NOT BREAKING THE BRUISED REED
Isaiah 42:1-17; Matthew 12:15-21

1. Jesus did not seek publicity.
– 12:15 looks back to verse 14
– 12:16, 19; see Matt.9:30-31; there are limits naturally – see John 7:37

2. Jesus is gentle in His pastoral care.
– 12:18-20; reeds were plentiful and cheap, and smoking wick required effort to keep it going
– Charles Simeon cited 2 Timothy 2:24 to himself hundreds of times.

3. Jesus calls the Gentiles into His kingdom.
– 12:18, 21; the NIV has ‘nations’
– Idolaters and degraded people will be called into His kingdom.
