Peter Barnes | Romans 11:26b-29
SERMON NOTES
THE DELIVERER FROM ZION
(Romans 11:26b-29)
– cites Isaiah 59 which says that Israel could not save herself so God stepped in to do it.
1. The Redeemer will come from Zion to Jacob.
– 11:26b-27, from Isa.59:20; 27:9; Jer.31:33.
-Zion must be the heavenly Zion
2. Israel is hostile yet elect.
– 11:28; Israel’s rejection benefited the Gentiles (11:11-12, 15; Acts 18:5-6)
– election here is as in Deut.4:37; 10:15; 1 Chron.16:13, not in Romans 11:5.
– like Eph.2:3-4; ‘Behind a frowning providence/ He hides a smiling face’ (William Cowper)
3. God’s gifts and calling are irrevocable.
– 11:28-29 show that verse 26 must refer to literal Israel. God has ‘a soft spot’ for Israel, if we can put it like that.
