Peter Barnes | Isaiah 61:10-11
SERMON NOTES
CLOTHED IN RIGHTEOUSNESS
Isaiah 61:10-11; Matthew 22:1-14
– some say that the speaker is the Messiah, but it is surely Zion, or, as Barry Webb suggests, Isaiah himself.
1. The joy of salvation.
– 61:10a; like Hannah in 1 Sam.2:1 and Mary in Luke 1:46-47
– 61:10c – like a wedding. Zinzendorf: ‘With joy shall I lift up my head’.
2. Clothed in imputed righteousness.
– 61:10b; hence Gen.3:21 as a picture
– Isa.64:6; Zech.3:1-5
– Matt.22:2, 11-12; ‘clothed in righteousness divine’ (Charles Wesley); ‘Their beauty this, their glorious dress:/ Jesus, Thy blood and righteousness’ (Zinzendorf)
3. Salvation is God’s gift.
– 61:10-11; God has clothed me and arrayed me.
– like Isa.55:10-11; this is a work of God illustrated in nature
