Peter Barnes | Isaiah 61:4-9
SERMON NOTES
BLESSING FOR ZION
Isaiah 61:4-9; Revelation 22:1-16
– Jesus is the one prophesied in Isaiah 61 (see Luke 4:21)
1. Zion will see restoration and joy.
– 61:4, 7; 65:17-19
– this is too much for the restoration after the exile in the sixth century B.C. or any supposed 1000 year reign; it has to be the heavenly Zion
2. The Gentiles will join Zion.
– 61:5-6; Ex.19:6 is applied to the Church in 1 Pet.2:9-10
– 61:9; scattering of the Jews leads to blessing for the Gentiles (Gen.12:2-3; Acts 2:8-11)
3. God’s everlasting covenant of grace and justice.
– 61:7-8; twice it is said to be everlasting (see too Isa.55:3; 59:21)
– verse 7 speaks of grace; verse 8 of justice; these are reconciled at Calvary.
