SERMON NOTES
THE YEAR OF THE LORD’S FAVOUR
Isaiah 61:1-3; Luke 4:14-30
– Jesus is the one prophesied in Isaiah 61 (see Luke 4:21)
1. Here is the Spirit-anointed Servant.
– 61:1; see 11:1-2; 42:1
– the apostles pointed to Christ (2 Cor.4:5); Christ points to Himself.
2. The Servant-Messiah will have a ministry of comfort.
– 61:1-3; nine infinitives
– echoes the Year of Jubilee or the Year of the Ram’s Horn (Lev.25:8-10, 17) – all debts cancelled, all slaves freed
– Col.1:13; they become oaks of righteousness to the glory of God
3. Christ offers us salvation before judgment.
– 61:2; day of vengeance is omitted in Luke 4:18-19
– John 3:17; 12:47; Christ will judge but only after first offering grace (John 5:22-29; 9:39)
– Acts 13:46; the offer is of great joy to the brokenhearted. Take it.
