Peter Barnes | Isaiah 59:1-8
SERMON NOTES
SIN IS OUR PROBLEM
Isaiah 59:1-8 (p.527); Romans 3:9-26
– Isaiah 59 tells of sin as our problem (59:1-8), a lament for sin (59:9-16), and God’s answer to sin (59:16-21).
1. God has the capacity and the readiness to save.
– 59:1; even Manasseh in 2 Chron.33:1-3, 6, 9, 10-13
– John Newton, Robert Flockhart (street preacher in Edinburgh for 43 years)
2. Sin separates us from God.
– 59:2; we are all by nature blame-shifters, but we shall all answer to God for our own sins.
3. We must repent of specific sins.
– 59:3-8; Spurgeon: ‘Particularise your sins.’
– violence, lying, injustice.
– sin grows and entangles (59:5-6); it does not make for peace (59:8); this is a description of all of us (see Rom.3:15-17)
– see 59:20 for the solution.
