JESUS AND THE JUDGES
(Judges 16 & Colossians 2:8-10)
– Luke 24:44-45. Alec Motyer: ‘Old Testament history is one long cry for something better, for a true king who would satisfy his people’s aspirations for peace and safety, reigning in perfection and ruling in righteousness.’
1. The judges all have much that is wrong with them.
– e.g. Judges 2:18-19. The last one mentioned in the book is Samson. We will look briefly at him as an example. He managed to be both strong and weak – Judges 16:17. The judges save Israel but the judges themselves need to be saved.
2. Jesus never sinned.
-John 10:31-33; John 14:9. He does not need to be saved; He comes as the Saviour, the one who saves.
3. The judges only rescue part of Israel for a short time.
– Judges 2:11; 5:31; 8:28. Life here is mixed.
4. Christ saves us forever.
– John 5:24; Col. 2:9-10; Heb.10:11-14. The judges achieve in a little way what Christ achieves for all eternity.
