Peter Barnes | Romans 9:22-24
SERMON NOTES
WRATH AND MERCY
(Romans 9:22-24)
– similar image used in 2 Tim.2:19-21 to make a different point
1. God is patient in His wrath.
– 9:22; Calvin v. Chrysostom
– the plagues in Exodus are warnings to Pharaoh
– Ezek.33:11; 2 Peter 3:4, 9; wrath and patience go together in God (Rom.2:4; 9:17)
2. God shows the riches of His glory in mercy.
– 9:23; Robert Haldane: ‘The salvation of the elect is mercy, pure mercy; and it is wonderful mercy.’
– grace is heavenly electing grace
3. God calls the elect even from the Gentiles.
– 9:24; 1:16
– called in Rom.8:29-30
– as an example, Aneityum in Vanuatu before the gospel came in 1848 was governed by fear of the spirits; there was widow strangulation, abortion, infanticide, perpetual warfare, and even cannibalism.
– yet God called them to Himself!
