Peter Barnes | Acts 17:22-25
SERMON NOTES
THE UNKNOWN GOD MADE KNOWN (Acts 17:22-25)
Isaiah 42:1-9; Acts 17:16-34
– Paul looks around to make a start, then tells of God as the all-sufficient creator.
1. Find a point of contact, if possible.
– 17:22; the Greek word for ‘superstitious’ (as in KJV) is also the word for ‘religious’. It has to be the latter here.
– 17:23; a number of these altars have been discovered; the Athenians were covering themselves in case they omitted a god.
– God is made known in Christ (John 3:11; 6:69; 10:14; 17:3; Heb.8:11; 1 John 2:20).
2. Start with God as the creator.
– 17:24; see Acts 14:15; Isa.42:5
– we need to know where we have come from
3. God is self-sufficient.
– 17:25; see 1 Kings 8:27-30
– Psalm 50:7-15
– God does not need us; He is not lonely.
