Peter Barnes | Ezekiel 24:15-27
SERMON NOTES
THE PROPHET BEREAVED
Ezekiel 24:15-27 ; Jeremiah 16:1-13
At first. Ezekiel might seem hard (3:7-9) compared to Jeremiah the weeping prophet (Jer.9:1).
1. Ezekiel’s delight in his wife.
– 24:15-16; God tests His people (Gen.22:1-2); Ezekiel is married, unlike Jeremiah (Jer.16:1-4), and happily married unlike Hosea (Hos.1:2; 3:1).
– went through a long day knowing she would die; Ps.73:25-26
2. Ezekiel is not to express his grief.
– 24:16-18; this is unnatural but that is the point
– Gen.23:2; Rom.12:15; Mark 5:38; John 11:35; 1 Thess.4:13; Lev.19:28. The Christian still grieves but not as the unbeliever does.
3. Israel is not to mourn when God desecrates the temple.
– 24:19-24; this is the city of God (Psalm 48:1-2)
– note Ezek.21:12; Lamentations, and 150 years later, Neh.1:2-4
– God will be just, Judah deserved all she got, but mercy is coming.
