SERMON NOTES
THE DAY OF ATONEMENT (Leviticus 23:26-32)
Leviticus 16:1-34; Hebrews 9:22-28
– Lev.23 lists the weekly Sabbath plus seven annual feasts. We are looking to see Christ in them (Col.2:16-17). How can God who is holy accept sinners?
1. A sinful high priest and a sinless High Priest.
– Lev.17:17, 6, 11-14; the high priest’s sins needed to be forgiven first
– Christ is the sinless High Priest (Heb.7:26-28)
2. Repeated sacrifices and one perfect sacrifice.
– Lev.16:7-9, 15, 18-19, 16; then the second goat in 16:10, 20-22
– a contrast to the perfect sacrifice of Christ in Heb.9:12, 25-28; note John 1:29
3. Limited access to an earthly sanctuary and access for all to heaven.
– see Heb.9:24; 10:19-23
– My faith would lay her hand/ On that dear head of Thine,/ While like a penitent I stand,/ And there confess my sin (Isaac Watts).
