Peter Barnes | Luke 22:20
SERMON NOTES
THE NEW COVENANT IN MY BLOOD
Luke 22:20; note Ex.24:1-11; Luke 22:7-23
1. The new covenant fulfils the old covenant.
– note Luke 1:72 for Zacharias’ words
– Jesus is looking back to Ex.24:8 & Jer.31:31
– in a real sense, there is only one everlasting covenant (Heb.13:20)
2. The cup shows that judgment is swallowed up in blessing.
– the ‘cup’ points to suffering in Mark 10:38-39 & Luke 22:42
– it is the cup of God’s wrath (Ps.75:8; Jer.25:15; Rev.14:9-10)
– but now the cup of blessing (1 Cor.10:16); John Duncan: ‘damnation taken lovingly’.
3. The covenant is for sinners.
– blood poured out in Lev.4:18, 25, 30
– Isa.53:12
Once it was mine, that cup of wrath,
And Jesus drank it dry!
