Peter Barnes | Romans 5:12-14
SERMON NOTES
ADAM TO MOSES
(Romans 5:12-14)
– like 1 Cor.15:22
1. Adam’s sin brought death.
– 5:12; the section is a bit rough as Paul picks up the sentence again in verse 18
– without the Fall, we cannot understand ourselves or the world
– Eccles.7:29; Ps.51:5
Augustine: ‘When a man is born, he is already born with death, because he contracts sin from Adam.’
2. Sin and death are present before the law.
– 5:13-14a;
(a) sin was in the world before the time of Moses. This should be obvious – e.g. Noah became drunk; Jacob’s sons ganged up on Joseph;
(b) sin was not counted before there was law (Rom. 4:15); there was still law (Rom. 2:14-16).
(c) death still reigned before the law was given.
3. Adam points to Christ.
– 5:14b; 1 Cor.15:45-49
– Adam is not Neolithic man or mythological man; he is a real figure who points to the true man, Jesus Christ.
