Peter Barnes | 1 Samuel 15:1-35
SERMON NOTES
BETTER TO OBEY THAN TO SACRIFICE
1 Samuel 15:1-35; 2 Corinthians 7:2-12
1. The strict justice of God.
– 15:1-9; see Deut.25:17-18; 1 Sam.15:33
– no salvation without judgment – Isa.35:5-6, 4; 61:1-3
– this is not primitive religion, but God’s justice
2. The refusal to face sin.
– 15:10-12; Saul covers up, not confesses (15:13-15); he pretends and shifts the blame (15:20-21)
– Saul can get the words nearly right (15:24-25), but he gives himself away (15:30) – like Pharaoh in Ex. 9:27; 10:17
– see John 12:42-43; need to confess and forsake sin (Prov.28:13)
3. Obedience comes first.
– 15:22-23; see Proverbs 21:3; 15:8.
– verse 23 is prophetic – see 1 Samuel 28
