Peter Barnes | Romans 5:6-10
SERMON NOTES
BLESSED SUBSTITUTION
(Romans 5:6-10)
1. Christ died at the right time.
– 5:6; see Mark 1:15; Gal.4:4; Eph.1:10.
– the new national curriculum has BCE and CE. But Christ is the true centre of all human history.
2. Christ died for the undeserving.
(a) when we were weak (5:6); see Rom.8:3; we are unable to obey God or to save ourselves
(b) Christ died for the ungodly (5:6) – for those who are not like Him.
(c) Christ died for sinners (5:8); for those who had missed the mark.
(d) Christ died for God’s enemies (5:10); see Col.1:21-23.
3. Christ’s love is supernatural.
– 5:7; Joseph is righteous in Gen.37:3-11 but perhaps lacking in a certain graciousness, which is present in Gen.50:19-21
– Mary Jane Walker:
There is none in heaven
Or on earth like Thee;
Thou hast died for sinners –
Therefore, Lord, for me.
