Peter Barnes | Romans 5:1-2
SERMON NOTES
PEACE, ACCESS, AND HOPE
(Romans 5:1-2)
– note the ‘therefore’ in 5:1, which links it back to Romans 1-4. Romans 5-8 are about hope (Thomas Schreiner); living (C. E. B. Cranfield); and assurance (Martyn Lloyd-Jones)
1. Peace with God.
– 5:1; many manuscripts have ‘let us have peace’, but ‘we have peace’ fits the context; Romans 5:10-11 is past tense.
– Calvin speaks of the ‘serenity of conscience’ but it is more objective; it is Col.1:20 more than Phil.4:7.
– the peace treaty has been signed in Jesus’ blood.
2. Access to God’s grace.
– 5:2a; like a swipe card to get into a room, or a homeless man invited to the king’s banquet.
– Heb.10:19-23; Eph.3:12
3. Joy in the hope of glory.
– 5:2b; it is also the word for ‘boast’ (used in a bad sense in Rom.3:27 and a good sense in 1 Cor.1:31).
– John 17:22-24
– 1 John 3:2
