HOW LONG WILL GOD HIDE HIS FACE?
(Psalm 13)
– David is in the pit in vv.1-2; he starts to climb out in vv.3-4; and he is out in vv.5-6
1. Depression can seem open-ended.
– 13:1-2; four ‘How longs?’
– Ps.13:1 reverses Ps.11:7
– Habakkuk 1:2; William Cowper suffered from terrible depression
2. Look to the Lord in prayer.
– 13:3-4; Peter Craigie says the enemy is death, but it fits more than that
– Luther: ‘the state in which hope despairs and yet despair hopes’.
3. Be assured of His mercy.
– 13:5-6
– Ps.40:1-3
– the good may be put in the past even though it is future (e.g. Isa.53:6-7); or it may refer to good further back in the past; or it may be spiritual good as in Psalm 119:71
