Peter Barnes | Psalm 5
SERMON NOTES
GOD AGAINST ALL EVILDOERS
(Psalm 5)
– a morning prayer (5:3)
1. Take time to call upon God in prayer.
– 5:1-3
– this is personal (‘my King and my God’) and he waits for an answer in verse 3;
– he prays in the morning (Spurgeon: ‘An hour in the morning is worth two in the evening’);
– and the prayer is prepared, not aimless.
2. Recognise that God hates evildoers.
– 5:4-6; see Eph.2:3
– 5:9 is cited in Romans 3:13 and applied to the whole world
– in 1937 Japanese soldiers sliced up pregnant Chinese women, and laid bets on the sex of the unborn child. How do we respond to that?
3. Take refuge in God’s lovingkindness.
– 5:7 (mercy in NIV, NKJV; steadfast love in ESV; lovingkindness in NASB)
– 5:11-12; there are the wicked and those who take refuge in God’s lovingkindness
